D&D: A Brief Introduction To Dungeons And Dragons

Dungeons and Dragons is the most popular role-playing game in the world and is one of the biggest entertainment franchises out there. Though it was once thought of as a game for “nerds” sitting in dark basements, D&D has become a mainstream success and a long list of celebrities have caught on to the craze. Because of this, there has also been an increased interest in D&D for those that have never played before.

Getting into Dungeons and Dragons can be a bit overwhelming for beginners as there are a lot of custom pieces and there’s no way to “win” or “lose.” Instead, it’s all about creating an adventure at the whim of the Dungeon Master and having fun. If you’re interested in getting into Dungeons and Dragons, here’s a brief intro to help you get your feet wet.

What is Dungeons and Dragons

Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop role-playing game that was created in the 1970s by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson after they had played several tabletop wargames. Though there are predesigned boards to use for D&D, most of them are customized by fans of the game. 

Whether you’re buying an official campaign from the publisher (Wizards of the Coast) or a custom board from someone on Etsy, there’s no wrong board for a good D&D campaign. Your campaign is run by a dungeon master (DM) who narrates your story and portrays any non-playable characters while also being the “judge” for anything that may need a ruling.

What You Need

After you’ve figured out which board you want to use for your Dungeons and Dragons campaign, there are a couple of other things that you’ll need to get started. The most important things are the character sheet and the dice. The dice control just about everything that you do and determine your success.

The other thing that you’ll need is the official rulebook depending on your role. The Player’s Handbook covers the playable characters, while the dungeon master will have their own handbook and the Monster Manual serves as the source for the creatures of Dungeons and Dragons.

Making Your Character

We mentioned the character sheet, and it will be one of the most important tools that you’ll have at your disposal. The character sheet will have all of your abilities, determining several things such as intelligence, charisma, and strength. Throughout the campaign, you’ll be able to level up these abilities to have a better chance at success.

There are 12 total classes to choose from for your character. These classes are barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, warlock, and wizard. When using a class such as a fighter, you’ll want to focus more on strength and dexterity whereas a warlock will need more intelligence and wisdom.

Rolling the Dice

There’s a reason why you see so many people with expensive custom dice when playing Dungeons and Dragons, and it’s because they’re the biggest component of the game and perhaps the most customizable and important thing you’ll own. The dice can determine how well you’ll do just about everything in D&D.

You may end up rolling a one when trying to tie your shoes and your character falls and knocks themselves out after sustaining a head injury. On the other hand, you could roll a 20 when fighting a mythical dragon and kill it in one shot. There’s really no telling what can happen with the dice, which is what makes D&D so exciting.

Starting Small

If you’re getting into Dungeons and Dragons for the first time, the best way to do so is likely through a premade official set. There are starter packs available through Wizards of the Coast that will introduce a player to the mechanics of the game, though some may be able to jump right into something more detailed and expansive.

There are plenty of people who have watched streams and videos of Dungeons and Dragons players and were able to pick up on the mechanics almost right away. It truly comes down to what you’re comfortable with as a player, so find that starting comfort zone and don’t be afraid to have some fun with your character as it could end up being one you play for years!

5 Tournament Formats To Know If You Run a Sports League

If you’re running a sports league, you know how hard it can be to get everyone on the same page. This is especially true if you’re trying to determine a champion of the league, but not all champions are crowned in the same way. There are several different formats to use to determine your overall winner, each with its pros and cons.

Let’s take a look at the most popular tournament formats that are used in professional and college leagues around the world. Then, you can decide which one is best for you and run it by your members to see if you can implement these formats into your next league season.

1. Single-Elimination Bracket

If you want the simplest format for tournaments in any sport, it’s the single elimination bracket. There are very few moving pieces involved in this type of tournament unless you re-seed people or teams after every round. The single-elimination bracket is typically used by professional sports leagues, however, the NBA is the only professional league in the United States that has a set single-elimination bracket without reseeding.

Think of the NCAA basketball tournament as a good way to set up a single elimination bracket. The best teams are the ones given high seeds, and they take on the lowest competition in the first round. The teams that are right in the middle also meet in the first round and whoever advances then takes on the top.

2. Double-Elimination Bracket

Sometimes fluky things can happen in sports and a team or person that has the talent to win the tournament can get bounced out early due to bad luck. With that in mind, a double-elimination bracket may be a good way to truly determine the best of the best. This is seen in many sports organizations, most notably in college baseball and softball.

Once a team loses a game, they are placed into the “losers” bracket of the overall tournament. The winner of that bracket will then take on the champion of the “winners” bracket to see who wins it all. You can reset losses to make it a best-of-three in the finals like the NCAA does, or you can make it so that the losers bracket representative has to defeat their opponent twice in a row.

3. Round-Robin

The round-robin tournament is a simple format that doesn’t require a bracket and tends to avoid any team or athlete fluking their way to a championship. In this format, every single person or team takes on every other one as they rotate through the schedule. It can be as simple as a four-team round-robin and can go as far as you’d like.

This is a more popular style of tournament for running the regular season of a league that doesn’t have playoffs. Think of the English Premier League and how their season is handled. The entire season is a straight-up round-robin and whoever has the most points once all of the games are completed becomes the champion with no postseason tournament.

4. Multi-Stage Bracket

There’s an excellent combination of round-robin and single-elimination called the multi-stage bracket, and that’s how the World Cup champion is determined every four years. The first stage (group stage) is a round robin that takes the top one or two teams and places them into the next stage.

Once the teams are decided from the group stage, you can then place them into a single or double-elimination bracket to determine the winner. It makes for some very compelling storylines in your league when this is the format.

5. Guaranteed Games Bracket

When running a sports league, you want to make sure the participants are getting their money’s worth and not wasting their time. Nobody wants to travel a long way only to get knocked out in the first round and then have to turn around and leave right away. That’s why there are guaranteed games tournaments, which are quite common in youth sports, especially travel sports where multiple games can be played in one day.

Essentially what happens is that you extend the double-elimination bracket until you run out of space for “losers” brackets. Typically you can guarantee three games even with a small pool of teams (at least eight) and can guarantee even more as that number jumps to 16, 32, and beyond.

Solitaire has been one of the most popular games in the world for a long while, and that’s not going to change any time soon. There are still well over 30 million each month that play at least one or two hands of solitaire, with several million playing on a daily basis. If you’re new to the game or have been sitting around in the beginner’s mode for years, there are tips that you should know.

Not every hand of solitaire is going to be a winner, but if you want to improve your skills, here are five tips that you need to know that will help you win more games. When you’re playing on expert levels and winning each hand, you’ll be thanking us!

1. Use Your Stock First

One mistake that a lot of solitaire players make from the very beginning is that they start to focus on the cards at the bottom and save the stock once everything is settled below. However, it should be the inverse at the start. Getting the stock cards out of the way is the most important thing you can do as a solitaire player, and there may be some cards you need on the first flip. This includes aces, which can get you started off on the right foot.

2. Get The Aces Out of the Way

If there are any aces available on the table, make sure to put them into the foundations table right away. First, flip the top stock cards, then take care of any aces that are there. Aces don’t have any other purpose in solitaire but to be the base of the foundation piles. If there are any twos, try to get those on the aces pile right away, as well. The threes can wait, but the aces and deuces have to go.

3. Use Your Kings

In almost every game of solitaire, there is going to be a vacant spot where there are no cards to flip over. When this happens, make sure that there’s a king that fills the void as it will be paramount in dumping off the queens and other lower cards. If your king is sitting on a tableau with a lot of cards with it, that can be a huge benefit to the rest of your game to move it on over to the vacant spot. However, if you’re filling two vacant spots, try to make sure that the kings are different colors.

4. Make Big Piles a Priority

The farther to the right a tableau is at the start of a game of solitaire, the higher it should be on your priority list. Trying to get the tableaus evened out from right to left is the easiest way to win quickly, but it’s not always possible. Still, focus on shrinking those piles before you start worrying about the tableaus that have just one or two cards.

5. Cards Don’t Have To Go To Foundations Right Away

One of the more common mistakes that people make right away is getting every card into the foundation as soon as they possibly can. It’s very enticing, of course, as building the foundation stacks means that you’re getting closer to winning the game, but you may need those cards. If you end up burying them, they can’t be brought back into your playing area right away (if at all). Those cards could end up saving you, so keep them in play as long as possible.

Bonus. Learn to Accept Defeat

There are a lot of people that think that every single game of solitaire has a winning path, but that’s not the case. There are some games that are simply impossible to win, and it’s best to not worry about trying to get through your already-established foundations to find the cards you need. We all want to win, but we can’t win them all!

With 250 miles of track, there is a lot of the London Underground to explore, but you just have to be careful. Some of the areas of the Underground are off-limits due to safety issues, and you also want to avoid tracks, especially if they’re being actively used.

Like the ever-so-popular Paris Catacombs, the catacombs scattered throughout Rome were designed for the purpose of providing burial and storage of deceased Romans after the city found the land wasn’t vast enough to hold all of the remains within cemeteries. 

The Roman Catacombs are made of areas that hold those belonging to different religions and some where the bodies of separate religions are buried alongside one another. The eerie and historic underground venture would give any brave explorer a thrill and give them a taste of the rich and odd history surrounding the catacombs. 

USA

The United States has a lot of sprawling urban areas in just about every state, but the one that really stands out is Michigan. That’s because the Wolverine State is home to Detroit, which has become the hottest urban exploration destination in America. If you make your way to the Motor City, you have to check out Michigan Central Station, which was once home to Michigan Central Railroad but closed in 1988.

Thankfully, the building hasn’t been completely abandoned or demolished, though there was some destruction in the early 2010s that made it dangerous for urban explorers. Since the city is planning on using the Michigan Central Station again, making it safe for urban explorers. When there, you’ll see the amazing interior from the Art Deco era of Detroit while still seeing some of the ruins.

“PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” set the standard for battle royale games upon its release in late 2017 and instantly became a success. Known to most as PUBG, the game became the most-played video game in the industry’s history, with nearly 2 billion players during its lifetime and over $10 billion in revenue. 

Along the way, there have been a lot of notable streamers playing PUBG, especially when popularity peaked back in 2018. Here are the five streamers that owe a lot of their success to PUBG becoming a global phenomenon.

5. Tecnosh

Joseph ‘Technosh’ Touma started his streaming career by playing a wide range of games that included “League of Legends”, “World of Warcraft” and “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive”. Whoever, since 2019, much of Tecnosh’s time has been spent playing PUBG. That’s where most of his viewers come from, as well, as he nearly doubles his viewer count whenever he’s playing.

The Brazilian gamer ended up going professional in PUBG and joined the Three and a Gado Men team in 2018. He would finish as high as second place in international tournament play, doing so in 2018 at the Copa IGN Season 2 Group Stage. Whenever Tecnosh is online, you can expect tens of thousands of people to pop in and watch his streams.

4. ChocoTaco

Jake “ChocoTaco” Throop played PUBG as a hobby on the side while working a full-time career early on. Then, he began streaming his gameplay and his channel began to take off almost immediately. Between July 2017 and July 2018, ChocoTaco saw his average viewercount rise from less than 40 to about 4,000 per stream.

This allowed ChocoTaco to focus on gaming full-time, and he reached peak popularity in 2019 thanks to his PUBG streams. Unlike Technosh, though, ChocoTaco does tend to mix up his games a little bit and plays other shooters that include “Apex Legends”, “Valorant” and “Call of Duty Warzone”.

Almost everyone knows Tyler Blevins as Ninja, the man who helped to put Fortnite on the map and became the most popular streamer in the world as a result. The Detroit native got his start in professional gaming by playing “Halo 3”, which he followed up by playing “H1Z1”. Then PUBG began increasing in popularity, Ninja made the jump over to the game and became one of the best in the world.

Ninja even won the Gamescom Invitational in 2017 and was on top of the PUBG world. 2. Shroud

Michael “Shroud” Grzesiak is known for being one of the best first-person shooter players in all of video game history. This includes games like “Counter-Strike” where he has won multiple tournaments on the world stage. After helping Cloud9 win the ESL Pro League, Shroud decided to step away from professional gaming on a full-time basis so he could concentrate on building a streaming community.

It ended up being the right move for Shroud as he instantly had a huge follower base, with many of his streams being based around PUBG. Shroud streamed the game for well over 2,500 hours before saying that he was done spending a bulk of his streaming time on the game. “I am still a firm believer that this game could be the number one game,” Shroud said of PUBG.

You can’t tell the story of video game streams without talking about Herschel Beahm IV, a.k.a. Dr. Disrespect. He launched his Twitch channel in 2011 portraying an exaggerated version of himself, and at the time was streaming only a few times here and there on “Call fo Duty”. After working for Sledgehammer Games and Justin.tv (the precursor to Twitch), Beahm decided to leave and focus on streaming full-time.

Thanks to his gameplay in the battle royale genre, Dr. Disrespect became one of the most followed streamers on the Twitch platform prior to his ban. 5 Tips To Help You Achieve More Fluency In Any Foreign Language

When learning a new language, you begin with that more accessible phase of starting to understand some of the words and start reading or writing at an entry level in that language. Then, there’s the advancement into the conversational phase of language that allows you to speak multiple sentences at a time. For those that are learning, this is usually where they end up.

There’s a massive plateau where it’s hard to make that jump from conversational to fluent, and it can be frustrating. If you find yourself as one of the millions that have been stuck here and are trying to become fluent, here are five tips that can help you reach your goals.

5. Think

There are some rough estimates that only around half of people have the ability to do an inner monologue. This is when you can hear your own voice in your head without actually speaking, leading to extensive lines of thought. For almost everyone, this inner voice comes from our native language, but it can be trained to mix things up.

Try using that voice in the language that you’re trying to become fluent in. You’ll be able to spot your errors without saying anything out loud. Being able to correct yourself before saying anything will lead to a more advanced grasp of the language and everything will flow much better in conversation.

4. Stop Using the Same Sentences

When many of us are learning a new language, we tend to stick to some familiar phrases. For instance, those that are learning Spanish might think of “Donde esta la biblioteca” or something along those lines. These familiar pieces of dialogue only serve as a crutch to use when you can’t think of anything else.

The best course of action is to forget these pieces of familiar grammar or dialogue exist and instead try to get out of your comfort zone. You’ll eventually learn when and where to use these new pieces of dialogue and you’ll become fluent in the language. To practice this, try writing down the new things that you’ve learned.

3. Use Your Ears and Eyes

You could learn how to write in a language and become an expert at it in just a short amount of time, but that doesn’t always translate into being able to speak the language. The vice versa of this is true, as well. Instead of focusing on one at a time, try to increase your verbal and written aptitude at the same time.

To do this, listen to audio where a transcript in the same language is available. If you’re reading what is being said at the same time, your brain will get a firmer grasp of the language overall and how it’s used. Once you get the hang of things, you can simply listen without needing the transcript.

2. Take Tests

Thankfully, there are many options to take proficiency tests in just about every language around the world. You can do these practice tests to see where you’re at in your learning while also finding out where your trouble spots are. A lot of people give up on becoming proficient because they don’t know what they’re doing wrong.

Practice tests are a window into your knowledge, and once you know where to improve, you can tackle that area of language. You may find that you’re getting your verbs wrong or perhaps the emphasis. Either way, knowledge is the most powerful tool, especially if it’s knowledge of how to improve.

1. Use Varying Sources

When you’re speaking in English and interacting with people that have different dialects and accents, you’ll pick up on the full scope of the language better. The same is true for every language, so it’s important to not use just one source. Education tools for language are often monotone and really only give you one way to speak.

Interacting with people with different accents and watching different videos in that language is a great way to mix things up. Not only are you picking up on different forms of dialect, but it’s also far less boring than the standard educational tools that are commonly used.

Like any greatest hits compilation album, this one doesn’t have any slow moments when going through the tracks, which starts off with “Keep Ya Head Up” and “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted”.

All in all, there are 25 tracks on “Greatest Hits”, and it peaked at number three on the Billboard 200. However, the album would see sustained sales throughout the years and eventually reached diamond status more than a decade after its initial release. Even in 2019 through 2022, it was at the year-end Billboard chart inside of the top 200.

4. Life After Death by Notorious B.I.G.

Just like Tupac’s “Greatest Hits”, “Life After Death” came out following the murder of Notorious B.I.G., but it was only a couple of weeks after his tragic death. “Life After Death” is considered by some to be among the greatest hip-hop albums ever made, and was a showcase of a man who got taken down during his peak.

“Life After Death” features songs including “Hypnotize”, “Mo Money Mo Problems” and “Going Back to Cali” which all turned out to be radio hits. The album peaked at number one in 1997 and was at the eighth spot on the year-end charts, while also finding its way to the top 100 of the decade-end charts.

3. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by Outkast

Back in 2003-04, you couldn’t go for more than 10 minutes without hearing a song from Outkast’s album “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below”. Whether it was the notoriously infectious “Hey Ya!” or “The Way You Move” to the more niche songs like “Ghetto Musick” and “Roses”, the album was unstoppable when released.

The album easily made its way to number one on the Billboard Charts in the United States and performed well in just about every other major market. For the entire 2000s decade, it finished inside of the top 35. That’s certainly cooler than being cool.

The top two-selling albums in hip-hop history came from one man, and you probably already guessed who it was from the very beginning. Of course, Eminem is that man, and the Detroit native was able to go certified diamond with his sophomore major label album. Following the success of 1999’s “The Slim Shady LP”, many were expecting great things from “The Marshall Mathers LP” and it didn’t disappoint.

The first single released off of the album was “The Real Slim Shady”, which achieved huge mainstream success on the pop charts. This was followed up by more serious tracks including “The Way I Am” and “Stan”. There was a little something for everyone on “The Marshall Mathers LP”, which allowed it to become number one in most major countries and sell over 12.5 million copies in the United States alone.

It took two years for Eminem to follow up “The Marshall Mathers LP” and he did it in a huge way with 2002’s “The Eminem Show”. Recorded in California and Detroit, “The Eminem Show”, much like its predecessor, debuted with a single fit for radio in the form of “Without Me”. And just like the last time, Eminem captured attention first then released the more serious tracks.

Among them were “Cleanin’ Out My Closet”, “Superman” and “Sing for the Moment”. “The Eminem Show” outperformed his previous ventures and all hip-hop albums in general, with a claimed 27 million copies sold worldwide.

Everyone has hobbies, even those that are known for their stardom on stage and screen. Warhammer is one of those hobbies that might not be quite as popular with entertainers, but there are still some devoted fans that have ended up becoming famous. Let’s take a look at five of those celebrities who are obsessed with Warhammer.

5. Ansel Elgort

While many of Hollywood’s most famous Warhammer players only dabble in the game, Ansel Elgort has a full-on obsession. Whenever there’s a chance to bring up his favorite game during an interview, Elgort makes sure to take full advantage. Even going on shows like “Conan”, Elgort has used his airtime to bring up his miniatures and Warhammer in general.

Elgort got his start in acting in 2013 when he had a role in the remake of “Carrie”, and has since become a big star thanks to his lead roles in films that include “Baby Driver”, “The Goldfinch” and “West Side Story”. Now with tons of money to spend from his acting career, Elgort’s Warhammer collection has only gotten more lavish.

4. Trey Parker

There isn’t a whole lot of downtime when you’re trying to produce a show from scratch that has to air in six days. However, in the little time that “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker does have, he spends a bit of it on Warhammer. There have been several shots of Parker playing with miniatures, including Warhammer, between his time writing dialogue or recording vocal tracks for the long running series.

Along with Matt Stone, Parker created “South park” in the early 1990s from an animated short, spawning a television series that began on Comedy Central in 1997. Since then, the series has become a staple of television and has now aired well over 300 episodes. Some of Parker’s side projects include “BASEketball”, “The Book of Mormon” and “Team America: World Police”.

3. Robin Williams

The late, great Robin Williams had a personality that was built for tabletop games, and he enjoyed the likes of Dungeons and Dragons and Warhammer. Playing alongside his daughter Zelda, Williams always had an interesting character and story whenever he was playing. He’d pop into small hobby stores to play Warhammer every now and then, as well.

One Reddit user photographed Williams in his store and said that Williams narrated the entire game with his usual flare for the dramatic. Another user from a different shop said that employees were hiding when Williams was shopping as they didn’t want to disturb him but he ended up approaching them and talking about Warhammer for over an hour.

In the world of professional wrestling, Samoa Joe is about as tough as they come. While there are some wrestlers that are slightly interested in Warhammer, Samoa Joe is a diehard fan. He has appeared at Warhammer World and has talked about his love for the game on social media constantly. A lot of people that didn’t know about his fandom, though, were surprised when he was walking around with a Mark VI Corvus mask in 2020.

Born Nuufolau Seanoa, Samoa Joe started wrestling in the late 1990s and became a champion with Ring of Honor, TNA, and eventually joined the WWE as part of the NXT brand. He made his main roster debut in WWE in 2017 and became a commentator prior to parting ways from the company.

1. Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill is one of the biggest stars in recent memory thanks to his leading roles in “The Witcher” and the Superman films during the Zack Snyder era of the DC Cinematic Universe. After learning that he wouldn’t be returning to either of the successful franchises, however, Cavill revealed that he’s working on a Warhammer project.

This allowed Cavill to talk about his history with Warhammer, and it apparently ran deeper than anyone could have ever thought. “I was that guy who bought all of the Warhammer fantasy armies, books, and all of the codexes and would just read them,” Cavill said. “I never had a chance to actually play with anyone, but I would get all the lore and learn all the rules.” Thankfully, Cavill now has a chance to play with others while also playing characters on-screen.
