What kid doesn’t love arcades? Bringing your child to the arcade for their birthday is an idea they’ll love. Whether you have their birthday party at the arcade itself or bring them and a few friends out for a fun birthday trip, they’ll have so much fun with all the variety arcades offer. 

It doubles as a fun activity for the parents as well. Unlike a lot of places you bring your kids to, arcades are fun for all ages and you can unleash your inner child. Some arcades may even offer sensory-friendly days for children who struggle in the typical arcade setting.

Scavenger Hunt

Everyone loves a scavenger hunt. The excitement you feel discovering and solving each clue, which leads you to another, then another, until you get to the final prize. Kids tend to love experiences more than the actual present, or prize itself. 

Creating a fun activity like a scavenger hunt gives children the chance to problem solve and build excitement, enjoying the fun along the way. You can make it a birthday party game and have all the kids play along, using party favors as clues and prizes. Or maybe use the scavenger hunt as a way for your child to find their gifts in a fun and exciting way. 

Sleepover Party

Sleepovers are a great way to keep the party going because sometimes you don’t want the party to end. Plan ahead and coordinate beforehand with the other parents to make it all run smoothly. 

Surely they’ll be more than happy to have a quiet night to themselves without the post-birthday party sugar high their kids will have. To make it more fun, have the kids arrive in their pajamas and indulge in classic sleepover activities to keep the kiddos entertained. 

Do Whatever They Want For The Day

Kids don’t often get much of a say in what they get to wear, what they eat, where they go, and what they’re allowed to do.  Their lives are often set in routine and drawn out for them, because, well, they’re kids. 

Doing whatever they want for a day, within reason, is an idea kids really ought to enjoy. It gives children the feeling of freedom, excitement, and as if they’re in charge for once. You’ll have to keep an open mind and let loose to truly allow them to have as much fun and freedom as possible for their special day. Of course, set some boundaries, but otherwise, let them lead the way. 

Bring Them to a Petting Zoo or Aquarium

Oftentimes children relentlessly ask their parents for a pet. Sometimes the household, or child may not be ready for an adorable new family member just yet. 

One way to give your child a memorable birthday is to give them a closer look at some of the animals they love and adore. It’s a wonderful way to give your child the experience of being around animals, without having to take on the responsibility of having a pet at home. 

Ranking The 5 Michigan College Football Stadiums

Michiganders love their football, and even more so, arguing about football. There are five universities that are in the FBS division of college football, and all of them are rivals with one another. These five schools are also proud of their stadiums, especially with a certain school in Ann Arbor boasting about its maximum capacity.

When looking at all five of the FBS stadiums in Michigan, how do they stack up against one another? Though some people would disagree, a majority would be willing to admit that the five belong in this particular order.

5. Rynearson Stadium (Eastern Michigan University)

Rynearson Stadium is located in the northern part of EMU’s campus in Ypsilanti, which opened for the first time in September 1969. Since then, there have been a pair of expansions, but the stadium is lacking in upgrades compared to its counterparts, even in the Mid-American Conference. 

Though the stadium itself seats over 30,000 people, Rynearson Stadium has yet to have more than 87 percent of its seats sold for a single game. Many college football fans feel that Rynearson needs a serious facelift to draw in a crowd, with many citing the track that surrounds the field as one of the biggest eyesores.

4. Waldo Stadium (Western Michigan University)

There’s a big jump from number five to number four as many consider Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo to be a perfectly fine venue for football. With a cost of just over $4 million when adjusted to today’s money, Waldo has been open since 1939 and has seen a capacity number jump from 15,000 to its current 30,200.

There have been instances in which Waldo Stadium has gone well over capacity, including a 2000 matchup against Indiana State that drew in over 36,000 people. Of course, Waldo does have one tiny problem due to its elevation. No other part of Kalamazoo is lower than Waldo Stadium, which can result in easy flooding.

3. Kelly/Shorts Stadium (Central Michigan University)

There was once a time when Kelly/Shorts Stadium was lower on the list, but due to upgrades both during and after the Brian Kelly era, the Chippewas’ home stadium in Mount Pleasant climbs up to number three. Opened in 1972, the capacity has increased from 20,000 to over 30,000, breaking the attendance record in 2012 with 35,127 against Michigan State.

The stadium has seen a lot of new amenities added over the years, including new team facilities in the end zones and permanent lighting that make it stand out. Of the three MAC schools in Michigan, CMU’s football stadium stands out as the top.

2. Spartan Stadium (Michigan State University)

Originally named College Field when it first opened up in 1923, Spartan Stadium has seen a lot of changes over the years. This includes massive expansions and renovations, two of which have taken place since 2005. Spartan Stadium’s capacity has increased to over 80,400 during its history and has been home to some of the most memorable games in the state.

The updated press box and luxury suites are a sight to behold, and the seating arrangement makes Spartan Stadium a true home advantage for the boys from East Lansing. The new bells and whistles at Spartan Stadium haven’t gone unnoticed, and it’s only expected to get better as the Big Ten Conference revenue increases.

We mentioned it earlier, and of course “The Big House” has to be tops in the state due to its size and history alone. Opened in Ann Arbor in 1927 with a capacity of 72,000, Michigan Stadium has undergone a lot of changes that have increased that capacity to 107,601. The record attendance was set against Notre Dame in 2013 with over 115,100 people in the stadium.

Michigan Stadium was built with the idea of potentially needing 150,000 seats, and that may one day be realized. The stadium is built into the ground and is unassuming for fans from the outside, and feels like its own large city when you’ve passed through the gates.

The great state of Michigan has some of the proudest residents, and for good reason. The state that we call home has something for everybody, from big cities like Detroit and Grand Rapids all the way down to the small towns surrounded by beautiful lakes and everything in between. While Michiganders will tell you there’s no bad place to live, there are some that truly stand out as being great.

When narrowing it down to just a handful of cities, which ones in Michigan are the best? Here are the top five that have people moving from across the country to start a family, get a nice house, and find a new career.

5. Midland

Midland comes from humble beginnings with a population that was only around 8,000 in 1930 and increased nearly five times over in the next 40 years. While the population has remained steady since 1970, the city has had more life brought to it throughout the decades. Midland is home to Dow Chemical Company, which was instrumental in putting the city on the map.

Midland is a nice blend of both rural areas with white-collar suburbia all in one package. You can own a great home while working a six-figure job without having to worry about heavy traffic. Midland has plenty of natural beauty and is only a short drive away from Central Michigan University.

4. Okemos

Located just minutes from the state capital of Lansing, Okemos is a small suburb of just over 20,000 people that was founded in 1839. Okemos got its start by being a farming area, though it has grown into the finest Lansing suburb.

Okemos has a lot of the same rural-suburban blended charm as Midland, all while being closer to more sizeable areas. Okemos has some of the finest public schools in the state and is a great place to start a family. The low crime rate is an added bonus, though the housing prices may make Okemos inaccessible for a lot of people.

3. East Grand Rapids

Naturally, East Grand Rapids (or EGR for short) is a suburb of Michigan’s second-largest city, Grand Rapids. Founded in 1891 as a village and in 1926 as a city, EGR has a population of just over 11,000. Much of the city’s area is water, comprising of Reeds Lake and Fisk Lake.

East Grand Rapids has a lot of the city charm that Grand Rapids has while giving it a more suburban small-town feel with a lot of natural beauty. EGR, like Okemos, has a tremendous public school system that makes it an ideal spot for families. There’s no shortage of things to do in the town, either.

2. Birmingham

The closest city on the list to Detroit is Birmingham, which is part of the Woodward Corridor and was established as a city in 1932. Birmingham has a population of over 21,000, which is actually lower than it was in 1960, but the city overall has seen a lot of growth.

Birmingham is among the most expensive places to live in the state of Michigan, but there’s a reason for that. Birmingham has some of the lowest crime rates and best schools in the country, not just in the state of Michigan. It’s a short trip to many notable venues in the Detroit area and offers great nightlife that some of the smaller cities on the list don’t.

The largest city by far on the list, Ann Arbor has a population of over 120,000 thanks to it being the home to the University of Michigan. On top of having one of the most prestigious universities in the country, Ann Arbor has been designated as one of America’s best cities to live.

Along with their quirky and R-rated captions typed in all caps.

The internet wouldn’t be what it is today without the use of memes. As time has gone on, memes are seen as more of a form of communication and expression of self than a standard text or email. They’re funny, they’re creative, and most are just fun to look at. Throughout the history of memes, many have left the world’s collective mind almost as soon as they became popular.

Then, there are those rare memes that transcended the internet and hit mainstream pop culture. Twitter user @MISSINGEGIRL first posted the famous meme in 2019, using a still image of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Taylor Armstrong and Kyle Richards from the episode “Malibu Beach Party from Hell” for the left portion of the meme and a Canadian cat named Smudge found on Tumblr for the right portion of the meme.

A classic meme that will live on forever is the Distracted Boyfriend meme, born from a stock photo taken by Antonio Guillem in Catalonia Spain. Guillem wanted to capture a fun depiction of infidelity through the use of the three models seen in the photo. 

The man in the photo is seen looking back in an over-expressive and almost comedic way at a woman walking past him and his girlfriend on the street, who looks at him with a dramatic look of disbelief and disgust. The meme rose to popularity in 2017 and has been a fan-favorite ever since. 

Crying Jordan

The story behind the picture may not be all that funny, but the internet has taken a picture of Michael Jordan crying and turned it into a hilarious meme that will definitely stand the test of time. The photo of basketball legend Michael Jordan was taken by New Times Photographer Stephan Olvera and features Jordan crying in the middle of his induction to the Basketball Hall of Fame. A legend himself, this meme may live on in the same right. 

Kermit and Evil Kermit 

There’s a surprising amount of memes featuring Kermit the frog and one that’s particularly entertaining is the Evil Kermit meme.  The image is a still taken from the “Muppets Most Wanted” movie where Kermit is talking to his nemesis Constantine who is dressed in a black cloak, similar to a Sith Lord. 

Twitter user @aaannnnyyyyaaaa posted a screenshot of good and evil Kermit. The internet fell in love with the meme where captions depict thoughts of good Kermit and evil Kermit, resulting in hilarious and relatable memes. The formula behind the meme and the fact that Kermit is meme gold ensures this meme isn’t going anywhere. 

This Is Fine

One of the cutest and most relatable memes is the “This is Fine” dog, taken from the webcomic strip “On Fire” in 2013. It shows a human-like cartoon dog at a table enjoying his coffee, saying “this is fine”, while the room around him is engulfed in flames. 

Essentially portraying the sarcastic calm one has when attempting to keep it together while everything around them is chaos. It’s because of this, it makes for a hilariously relatable meme that the internet can’t get enough of.

The Indian Premier League certainly isn’t among the oldest professional sports leagues in the world, but it is already one of the most popular. Each year, 10 teams battle it out for the IPL championship and the valuation of the league is now several billion dollars. Along the way, there have been some truly great players, with some establishing themselves as legends.

Out of the many IPL players in the early parts of the league, which ones have been the best? Taking their contributions and production into consideration, there are five players that have separated themselves from the rest of the pack to be considered the best IPL players of all time.

5. Shane Watson

The other non-Indian-born player on the list is Shane Watson, who hails from Ipswich, Australia. Watson is one of the most influential cricket players of all time and spent eight years playing professionally before making his way to the IPL when it began in 2008. Watson started his IPL career with the Rajasthan Royals where he stayed for seven years, and has since played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings during his IPL career.

Watson is tied for third all-time in the IPL with four centuries which spanned from 2008 to 2020 in 141 innings. Watson collected 3,874 runs and 92 wickets, joining just a handful of players to assemble 500 runs and 20 wickets, playing away the milestone. Watson is also one of a select few to record a hat trick.

4. Suresh Raina

A batsman who joined the Indian national team in 2005, Suresh Raina stuck around for 13 years while also having a long career in the IPL. At the advent of the league, Raina joined the Chennai Super Kings where he played until 2015, and rejoined the team in 2018 after spending two years with the Gujarat Lions. 

Raina finds himself close to the top of the leaderboard in many IPL career marks, including runs. In fact, Raina holds the team record for most career runs on two different teams. Raina also set the record for best strike rates in an inning with 1.5 that he set in May 2011. 

3. Dwayne Bravo

One of just two players on the list that were born outside of India, Dwayne Bravo is a native of Trinidad and Tobago, with the all-rounder representing the West Indies. Bravo was around for the start of the IPL, starting with the Mumbai Indians before also playing for the Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Lions. During that time, Bravo also spent time playing professionally outside of India.

Bravo holds the IPL record for most wickets taken at 183, with no other player being particularly close. 33 of those wickets have come against the Mumbai Indians and another 22 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

2. MS Dhoni

The former captain of India’s national team made his international debut in 2004 and played domestically before the formation of the IPL. In 2008, he was part of the first Chennai Super Kings team (squad no. 7) where he remained through 2015. MS Dhoni would return to the team in 2018, and for those two years in between, he was a member of the Rising Pune Supergiant team.

Dhoni is sixth-all time in the list of most career sixes with 229, which he did in 206 innings. He also dominates a couple of career records, recording 170 dismissals and 131 catches to go along with 39 career stumpings. 

1. Virat Kohli

At the top of just about everybody’s list for best IPL player of all time is Virat Kohli, the New Dehli-born legend who came into the professional ranks at the right time. Kohli was beginning to hit his prime when the IPL was formed, and he joined Royal Challengers Bangalore at their inception and has remained with the team ever since.

Kohli holds the IPL record for the most runs in his career and has feasted on teams like Rising Pune Supergiant and the Delhi Capitals, holding the record for most runs against both franchises. Kohli has a career-high of 108, which occurred on May 7, 2016, against RPS, and he’s third all-time in half-centuries with 44.

Manuel Franco

In early 2019, Manuel Franco became the third-highest-earning lottery winner with a jackpot of $768.4 million. The Wisconsin native purchased $10 worth of lottery tickets at a Speedway in New Berlin. Little did he know, one of those tickets would change his life. Franco himself admitted he had a good feeling about the tickers and winked at the camera on his way out. Before the win, he was employed at Target and lived a normal life. Now he’s enjoying the $326 million lump sum in winnings. 

Mavis Wanczyk

In 2017, Massachusetts native Mavis Wanczyk won an incredible $758.7 million Powerball Jackpot. Wanczyk chose the lump sum as the way to collect her winnings and ended up taking home over $300 million. She bought five tickets in total, two tickets with randomly generated sets of numbers and the other three tickets with chosen numbers, some of which were combinations of her family members’ birth dates. She purchased the tickets at the Pride Station and Store in Chicopee Massachusetts. The store received a $50,000 bonus for having sold the ticket. 

John and Lisa Robinson 

John and Lisa Robinson are a couple from a small town in Tennessee who didn’t let the lottery change them. They won a third of the $1.6 billion jackpot after purchasing one of the three winning tickets, the two others having been sold in California and Florida. The couple took the lump sum payout of over $300 million. They don’t intend on doing the things most of us would when winning such an enormous sum of money. They’ve told news outlets they never wanted that lifestyle in the first place and money hasn’t changed that. Instead, they decided to pay off debts and donate, holding on to the remaining money. 

Maureen Smith and David Kaltschmidt

Another couple who took part in the $1.6 billion jackpot winnings is Maureen Smith and her husband David Kaltschmidt from Melbourne Beach Florida. The couple told the media that they have a tradition of buying lottery tickets from their local Publix grocery store as well as playing the same numbers for the last 30 years. Their lucky numbers finally struck gold in 2016. The couple chose to take the lump sum payout, due to their age and not knowing if they’d be around to receive payments throughout the years. They still live the same lives, albeit with more stress and even a couple of fancy new cars. 

Scott Godfrey

Scott Godfrey, a kind-hearted man from Morro Bay California, was the lucky winner of the $699 million jackpot in 2021. He bought the 10 tickets from his local Albertsons. He chose quick picks for all of the tickets and the very first ticket of the bunch ended up being the one that won it all. He decided on the lump sum payout of over $490 million, with plans to donate a large portion of it through a foundation set up by him and his family.

There have been several people that have won the lottery over the years and didn’t even know it at first, or have had some really roundabout ways of cashing in their winning tickets.

There are a few truly bizarre stories of lottery winners that will have you double and triple-checking your tickets to see if you actually won. These five stories will also make you wonder if you may have won years ago without even knowing.

Valentine’s Day Craziness

In April of 2019, Canadian couple Nicole Pedneault and Roger Larocque became the lucky winners of the $750,000 prize money for a lottery ticket that won the year prior. They mentioned having bought the ticket for Valentine’s Day in 2018 and apparently tucked it away and forgot about it. In April of 2019, their grandson asked for informational books to help with a school project. When Nicole went through the books for her grandson, a ticket fell out of the pages. To their amazement, the ticket was a winner, and even more amazing, the ticket was still valid, but only for two more days. The couple turned in their ticket and collect their winnings. A very happy ending to what could have been an unfortunate situation. 

Aussie Luck

The next story is one you may have heard of before. In 1998, Bill Morgan of Australia was the victim of a horrible car crash, the vehicle almost crushing him. He survived but suffered a heart attack as a result of the crash. He was rushed to the hospital, where they administered a drug that caused an allergic reaction. He died for 14 minutes and was put into a medically induced coma for 12 days after his heart stopped beating. He recovered and with his newfound lease on life, decided to play the lottery after settling into his life with his then-fiancée. He ended up winning a car worth $17,000. Insane luck followed soon after when the local news station covered his story and asked him to reenact the win. When he did, he scratched off a $250,000 winning ticket. Bill Morgan is one lucky guy. 

Chilled Win

A funny story about a man from the UK, whose reaction to winning a $106 million lottery prize went viral on Tik Tok. The audio recording of Andrew Clark’s phone call to the National Lottery line received social media due to his calm demeanor after having won a whopping $106 million prize. Clark is a busy man who tends to let things pile up in his van. Including his lottery tickets. His partner’s niece called and told him to check his tickets after the winning numbers had been announced. Days later he went through the stack of tickets and found a winner. A big winner. His reaction gave viewers a good laugh and was marked as the most British response ever. 

Kind Citizen

Losing lottery tickets seems to be a common theme for most winners. Michael J Weirsky is one of those. The man from New Jersey accidentally left his winning tickets on a local convenience store counter while distracted. A kind man turned the tickets into the store owner and a frantic Michael eventually found his way back to the store to ask if they had seen the tickets. He ended up winning an astounding $273 million. 

Better Late Than Never

Another lucky winner for more reasons than one is Joemel Panisa. He decided to clean his office and when doing so, found a lottery ticket he had tucked away in an envelope the year prior. It turned out to be a $1 million winning ticket and was only days away from becoming invalid in the ultimate bout of good timing.
