5 Key Differences Between Millennials And Generation X

Sometimes called the forgotten generation, Generation X is stuck between the Baby Boomers and the Millenials, and they never seem to get the same media attention as the generations on either side of them. Born between 1965 and 1979, Gen X is one of the smallest generations, but it’s created significant cultural influences.

Millennials, in contrast, were born between 1980 and 2000. Although they’re often talked about as if they’re kids, they’re now adults with homes and families, and the oldest part of this generation is well into their 40s. Although these generations share several similarities, they have a lot of differences — check out these five key distinctions.

1. Generation X were latch-key kids.

Generation X was called the latch key generation. Their families were the first to become dual income earners. As a result, they rode their bikes home from school, made their own snacks, and raised themselves for a few hours until their parents got home from work.

By the time most millennials were growing up, this practice had fallen by the wayside — and was even labeled as neglectful in many situations. Millennials grew up with lots of supervision and tons of activities. They were also notorious for winning participation ribbons.

2. Millennials are more tech-savvy.

Millennials are much more tech-savvy than their older counterparts. By the time the oldest millennials were 10, most homes had a computer and video games. This trend has continued into their adulthoods. They often prefer navigating shopping, personal finance, and other essentials through an app, and they use social media at higher rates than Gen X.

Although Gen X didn’t grow up with the same level of technology, they know how to navigate it. They use technology for work and play. They just don’t use it as much as Millennials. They also tend to gravitate toward older media sources such as TV and radio when they’re consuming news and entertainment.

3. Gen X often sees work as just a job.

When asked about work, Gen X often says “it’s just a job.” Millennials, in contrast, tend to want a much deeper connection with their work. They want fulfillment from their careers. They want to feel as if their work matters to their community or to the world.

Despite these basic differences, millennials and Gen X have similar job patterns. While many people think that millennials don’t stay at their jobs as long as older generations, the numbers tell a different story. In 2016, close to two-thirds of millennials had been at their jobs for over a year. Twenty years earlier, Gen Xers had similar retention rates.

4. Millennials are more likely to be college educated.

Millennials are more likely to be college educated than the Gen X crowd. Approximately, 38% of millennial men and 46% of millennial women had a college degree. In contrast, only about a third of Gen Xers of either gender have a college degree.

5. Their generations were shaped by different social and political events.

These generations are different because they were shaped by different social and political events. The older Gen Xers remember Watergate and the younger ones remember the end of the Cold War. Their generation was also shaped by an increasing divorce rate and moms going to work.

Older millennials experienced 9/11 just as they were becoming adults, and while the younger part of this generation was barely alive when 9/11 happened, they grew up under the shadow of terrorist attacks. Although their parents were also very likely to be divorced, this generation grew up sheltered. Their parents wanted to protect them from the world.

Feel like you have traits of both generations? Well, you may be right. People who were born on the cusp of these generations often feel more tech-savvy than their older Gen X counterparts, but they don’t feel completely akin to the Millennial vibe either. These in-betweeners take on the name Xennnials, and they often bridge the differences between these two generations.

Homesteading Secrets: 5 Fundamentals to Compost Faster

When you compost, you become a vital part of the circle of life. You take what would become toxic garbage in a landfill and help nature turn it into nutrient-dense dirt. You can use that dirt to live a more self-sufficient, homesteading life.

But a slow compost can wreck your plans for living more sustainably. If not adequately managed, decomposition can take as long as two years. It’s even worse in colder climates. But you and your garden can enjoy that black gold in as few as 3-6 months if you apply these 5 compost fundamentals.

1. Check Its Temperature

An active compost produces a surprising amount of heat. It should generally stay between 50-70 C (125-160 F). It will steam on a cold morning.

You can check its temperature with a compost thermometer or a meat thermometer (that you do not also use for meat).

Don’t despair if you can’t keep it hot 100% of the time. But hot compost decomposes faster. The next 4 fundamentals are all about keeping that compost hot and active.

2. Set Up More than One Compost

Your compost will never finish if you keep adding to it. Instead, fill up a compost pile, preferably within about 3 months. Then let it fully decompose for the next 3 months while you fill up another one.

Many homesteading enthusiasts have 3 or 4. They produce and need a lot of compost for their self-sufficient permaculture garden ecosystems.

3. Add Finished Compost to Your New One

Finished compost still has an abundance of microorganisms that break down the pile. Give your new pile a jumpstart by adding a gallon or more to the new pile.

It doesn’t take much.

4. Add a Mix of Materials

The ideal compost has approximately a 1:1 ratio of nitrogen-carbon. If too much of one or the other, it will rot and stink instead of decomposing.

In the homesteading world, we call nitrogen-adding waste “greens”. These come primarily from kitchen scraps like:

  • Veg tops, roots, and seeds
  • Corn cobs
  • Shells
  • Coffee grounds, loose tea leaves, and compostable tea bags
  • Spoiled food

Grass clippings, weeds, chicken droppings, and prunings can also add nitrogen.

Items that add carbon are called “browns”. These include:

  • Cardboard
  • Paper
  • Dried leaves
  • Small sticks
  • Sawdust and shavings
  • Straw

Achieving 1/2 and 1/2 in a home compost isn’t an exact science. Most of these have a mix of both nitrogen and carbon. But you should strive for about half and half visually to get close enough that the compost does the rest.

5. Turn Your Compost Weekly

Composts must have air and water to decompose. Turning your compost and watering it if it’s dry can meet these requirements.

Weekly turning is a minimum. Turning it every time it cools can speed it up. But if you’ve followed the other fundamentals, weekly may be sufficient.

Compost piles can be heavy. So you’ll need to flip a shovel full at a time. Or get a compost aerator or auger, which makes regular compost turning much easier.

You can now look forward to nutrient-rich black compost faster than before.

5 Key Tips For Training Your Dog

A well-trained dog is a joy to have around. They listen to your commands and behave the way you want them to. In contrast, a poorly trained dog is hard to live with. They may steal food, have accidents in the house, or even behave aggressively towards other dogs. Luckily, with the right training, you can turn almost any dog into your best friend.

But where do you get started? How do you ensure your fluffy family member follows the rules and can even do a few tricks? Let these five critical dog training tips lead the way.

1. Set your dog up for success.

Housetraining is one of the first things that you will teach your new pup. To make the process as easy as possible, set your dog up for success. Make sure you take them outside to eliminate on a regular basis. Very young pups need to go out every couple of hours, but once your dog reaches three months, they can usually wait about four hours between potty breaks.

Put your dog on a leash and take them to the same spot every day. Then, once they’ve done their business, praise them heavily and let them off the leash. If they don’t go within about 15 minutes, take them inside, put them into a crate, and try again about 15 minutes later. Most dogs will avoid peeing or pooping in the crate so this helps to ensure they’re ready when you go back outside for another try.

2. Use consistent cue words.

Whether you’re trying to house train your dog or teach them to shake or sit, you need to use consistent cue words. For instance, when you take your dog outside to go to the bathroom, say the same word every time your dog squats down. Also make sure anyone else who lives in your home uses the same word.

With consistency, your dog will quickly learn the words you’re using. The average dog can learn about 165 words, but when you’re in the training stages, you really want to stick with the words and concepts that you need them to know.

3. Reduce distractions until you reach the proofing stage.

While training your dog, try to reduce distractions. A busy dog park, for example, is not the place to start training your dog to sit, speak, shake, roll over, or do other tricks. Instead, start working on these training essentials on a quiet day at home.

Also, make sure that you eliminate internal distractions as well. If your dog is hungry, needs to go to the bathroom, or has excess energy from being pent up all day, they won’t be able to focus on the lesson. Take care of their core needs before you start training.

That said, when your dog learns a trick, you can introduce distractions during the proofing stage. Ultimately, whether you’re out on a busy walking path, in a hectic dog park, or around lots of people, you want your dog to be able to follow your commands.

4. Have fun and end on a positive note.

Have fun while training your dog. Use treats to keep them interested in the lesson, but also train your dog to do tricks that delight you. Your dog will be more likely to listen if they feel like you’re truly interested in their training. Also, make sure to end training sessions on a positive note by having your dog practice tricks and commands that they’ve already mastered.

5. Consider a dog obedience program.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to train your dog on your own. There are dog training experts who can work magic with pups. Consider signing up for a pet obedience class. These classes teach your dogs to follow commands, but they also show you tricks and tips on how to better train your dog.

How to Choose Your Big-Screen TV

Whether you’re looking to replace an older model or are shopping for a TV for a new home, there’s a lot to keep in mind when choosing a big-screen TV. By following some practical steps, however, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying your favorite movie, show, or sports match-up on your new big-screen television in no time!

Decide on Screen Size

So, just how big are we talking, here? When people refer to a “big-screen” TV, they’re generally talking about a TV with a screen that’s 55″ or larger. Of course, the exact size screen that’s right for you will depend on your personal preferences and the size of your room. In general, you can do this by measuring the viewing distance for your new TV and then dividing that number by 1.6.

For example, if you’ll be sitting eight feet (96 inches) from your TV, then your TV screen should be about 60 inches.

Smart TV or Not?

These days, there’s a big push for “smart” TVs that have all kinds of built-in apps and other capabilities. You will pay a premium for a smart TV, though, so you’ll want to decide whether it’s worth the price. To save some money, you might consider buying a traditional TV and then connecting a device like an Amazon Firestick or Roku to it. This will give your TV many of the same abilities of a smart TV without the price tag. Plus, you’ll be able to move the device to other televisions as needed.

Don’t Overlook Resolution

If you’re spending money on a big-screen TV, then of course picture quality matters. When shopping for a big-screen TV, then, look for something that offers 4K or Ultra HD with HDR. This is the best way to ensure the best picture quality no matter what you’re watching. Likewise, be sure that the HDMI cable(s) you use with your TV is from a trusted brand. Believe it or not, this can make quite a difference.

Choose the Right Brand

Speaking of brands, stick with reputable brands when you’re spending the money on a big-screen TV. Not only will these brands typically deliver the best quality picture and sound, but they’ll also stand behind their products with things like warranties and round-the-clock service/support. Some top TV brands to consider as you shop include Sony, Samsung, and LG.

Where You Buy Matters

Last but not least, don’t overlook the importance of buying your big-screen TV from an authorized dealer. You’ll usually find the best pricing from these sellers. Plus, their staff will have the knowledge and experience needed to answer your questions and ultimately help you make a decision. An authorized dealer may even be able to throw in extras, such as a free HDMI cable or installation/mounting of your new TV.

Enjoy Your New TV!

There’s a lot to keep in mind when buying a big-screen TV, but with these tips in mind, you’ll have your decision made in no time. From there, it’s just a matter of snagging a great deal and deciding where in your home you want your new TV mounted. Enjoy!

5 Things To Think About When Writing Your Will

Most people don’t want to think about their own deaths. But that event is unavoidable, and if you want control over where your assets go after your death, you need to write a will. If you’ve been putting off this task, you are certainly not alone. Many people avoid writing a will because they simply don’t want to think about their own deaths, or they assume that death is something that will happen decades in the future.

Unfortunately, you don’t have any control over your death, but if you write a will, you do have control over some of the things that happen after your death. Wondering where to get started? Here are five essential facts to consider.

1. Without a will, state intestacy laws apply.

If you don’t write a will, the state will decide what happens to your assets and to your minor children. The laws that govern this are called intestacy laws, and they vary from state to state. Generally, however, they distribute your assets (and your minor children) to the relatives who are considered closest to you under state law.

In some cases, intestacy laws can work well. For instance, if you live in a state where all of your assets go to your spouse, you may be fine with that arrangement. However, if you want your assets to go to your adult children instead of your spouse, these types of laws can wreak havoc on your wishes. To ensure you have control over what happens, you need to write a will.

2. You need an executor.

Your executor will help to carry out the logistics related to the will. They can be an attorney, a family member, or anyone you trust. Let them know where your will is located and if possible, give them a copy. Make sure to alert them if you update the will. Multiple copies of different wills can lead to legal issues after your death.

3. Minor children need guardians.

If you have minor children, they are arguably the most important part of your will. Consider who you want to take guardianship of your children if both you and their other parent die. Talk with potential guardians to make sure they’re up to the job, and also name some backup options in case your named guardians die before you do.
4. You can list all your assets or just give away your entire estate.

When you write a will, you can divvy up your entire estate to your beneficiaries or you can list out entire assets. You can also choose a hybrid model. For instance, you may want to leave a third of your estate to your spouse, your son, and your daughter, but then, you may want to leave your motorcycle to your best friend and your favorite painting to your favorite co-worker.

5. A trust can provide additional benefits when paired with a will.

In addition to writing a will, you may also want to set up a trust. A trust can help your heirs avoid probate. Probate is the legal process that confirms the legitimacy of your will and distributes your assets based on your will. When your assets go into an trust after your death, your heirs don’t have to deal with the legal process of probate.

A trust can also allow you to set up rules about how your assets are distributed. For instance, if you don’t want your children to inherit all of your money in cold cash, but you do want them to be able to access funds to go to college or to start a business, you need a trust. A trust allows you to create these types of conditions. Unfortunately, a will on its own doesn’t have this capability.

5 Most Iconic Sports Franchises

The debate may be largely settled that NFL quarterback Tom Brady is the G.O.A.T., but few agree on the greatest sports franchise. Statisticians lean on winning percentage or number of championships. But when it comes to determining the most iconic sports franchise a more subjective standard is apropos. Based on the optics of an organization’s players and moments that are ingrained in sports enthusiasts’ memories, these are — arguably — the 5 most iconic sports franchises on the American landscape ranked.

1: The Raiders

It would be unsuitable to call the Silver and Black the Las Vegas Raiders because they rank among the most transient professional sports teams. Founded as the Oakland Raider, iconic owner Al Davis thumbed his nose at the league by moving the franchise to Los Angeles, then back to Oakland. Now his son, Mark Davis, has set up shop in Sin City.

The pirate with an eye patch and crossed sabers reflects a collective history of rogue, misfit, and players others gave up on. Daryl “The Mad Bomber” Lamonica, Ken “The Snake” Stabler, Bo Jackson, Jack “The Assassin” Tatum, Howie Long, and Marcus Allen, are just a few of the historic figures who wore the uniform. The Raiders were involved in moments that are frozen in time such as the Immaculate Reception, Holy Roller, and Sea of Hands. Taking the franchise to another level, the Raiders were the first NFL team in the modern era to hire a Black head coach, female CEO, Latino head coach, and recently hired the first Black female president. Whether you follow sports or not, everyone knows the Raiders. Just win, baby!

2: New York Yankees

Few teams have enjoyed the success of Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees. Competing on one of the biggest stages in the world, “pinstripes” have become synonymous with the franchise. Select lineups have earned nicknames such as the Bronx Bombers and Murderers Row, among others, as the organization amassed 40 Pennants and 27 World Series titles.

The success of players such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Mariano Rivera, and Derek Jeter, among others, helped build an outfit known for winning. But the big moments such as Babe Ruth calling his shot in the 1932 World Series live forever.

3: Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers have both won 17 NBA championships. The East-West rivalry saw its heyday when the likes of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird drove the lane. Although both franchises rank among the most iconic, the Celtics get the nod over the Lakers. That’s largely because five of the Lakers titles came when they called Minnesota home and because Boston holds a winning record over L.A.

The Celtics also possess a history of household name players that rivals any organization. Besides Bird, Paul Pierce, John Havlicek, Bill Walton, Tiny Archibald, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, and Bill Russell dominated pro-hoops. Russell, for example, averaged an insane 22.5 rebounds per game and earned 11 championships. And it was an injured Bob Cousy who returned to the floor to lead the Celtics to a Game 6 victory over the Lakers for all the marbles in 1963.

4: Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers could arguably be considered the most storied franchise in NFL history. Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants fans might not necessarily agree. But Super Bowl champions receive the Lombardy Trophy, named after the former Packers coach who won the first two following the NFL-AFL merger. Vince Lombardi remains the most iconic and revered coach in league history.

The players that made the small market franchise thrive include Bart Starr, Brett Favre, Reggie White, Ray Nitschke, Herb Adderley, Jim Taylor, Sterling Sharpe, and quarterback Aaron Rogers earned MVP honors four times. Perhaps the biggest moment came in 1967 when Bart Starr orchestrated a quarterback keeper to defeat the Dallas Cowboys in the Ice Bowl. The wind chill on the field was -48 degrees.

5: Los Angeles Lakers

Although the Celtics may have bested the California pros over time, the Lakers have demonstrated a dedication to competing at the highest level few can rival. The historic cast of players includes Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, Bob McAdoo, and beloved center Shaquille O’Neal.

The franchise has a history of dramatic comebacks and high-scoring players. Perhaps the most iconic came when legends Kobe Bryant lobbed a pass to Shaquille O’Neal in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals to overcome a 16-point deficit and advance to the finals.

The Magic of Dubai – 5 Unique Attractions in This Amazing City

In addition to its status as the most populated city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Dubai is the capital of the Emirate of Dubai, the wealthiest of the seven emirates in the UAE. It serves to reason that Dubai would have some pretty amazing attractions, but many of the tourist destinations in this luxurious city seemed to be plucked out of the world of fiction if not science fiction!

Here are five places that you’ll want to consider visiting on your next trip to Dubai:

  1. Dubai Miracle Garden

Aptly named, this massive 775,000-square-foot flower garden is likely the largest of its kind in the world. The real “miracle” here, however, is that these roughly 45 million individual flowers are blooming in the midst of the incredibly dry and harsh Arabian Desert. The Dubai Miracle Garden features flowerbeds of nearly every size, shape, and form. It even has a fanciful Smurf garden for children!

  1. The Burj Khalifa Observation Deck

This is a “must see” destination for visitors to Dubai, many of whom have seen photographs taken from its lofty, 1,800-foot heights. The Burj Khalifa Observation Deck (otherwise known as “At the Top”) occupies the 124th story of Dubai’s landmark Burj Khalifa building. Towering well over 2,700 feet in total, the Burj Khalifa is the tallest building and self-supported structure in history. At the Top also offers guided tours to the 148th story of the Burj Khalifa.

  1. The Museum of the Future

Located on the boarder of Dubai’s famous financial district, the Museum of the Future is, first and foremost, a marvel of futuristic architecture that manages to stick out within a dazzlingly fascinating skyline. Its exterior is covered with Arabic calligraphy that spell out a poem by Emirate of Dubai leader Sheikh Mohammed. Inside, the Museum of the Future hosts a series of fantastic and innovative exhibitions that show just what future hold lead for Dubai and the rest of the world.

  1. The Queen Elizabeth 2

The longest-serving ocean liner in the Cunard Line and one of the fastest passenger ships of the 1900’s, the Queen Elizabeth 2 sailed 5.6 million miles while in active service. After idling in the breaker’s yard, it took on a new life in 2008. Permanently anchored in Dubai’s Mina Rashid harbor, it serves as a 224-room floating hotel with amenities such as the splendid Grand Lounge showroom, the quaint Golden Lion British pub, and the period authentic Chart Room.

  1. Ski Dubai

Flat, dry, and hot, the Arabian Desert is the very last place that you would expect to go snow skiing. But Dubai is nothing if not surprising. The massive resort Ski Dubai is home to an indoor winter wonderland with a 279-foot “mountain” that has multiple ski runs that include the first indoor course to get a black diamond rating. Because tourists generally don’t bring winter gear to Dubai, Ski Dubai’s entrance fee includes all the ski gear you might need.

The choice is yours on how you want to experience Australia. You just have to reflect on what you want to see and do, and then map out all your adventures before landing.

5 Mistakes People Make When Confronting Fear

Fear is an important human emotion. It protects us from dangerous situations. It increases our readiness for fight or flight. But fear can also be destructive, keeping us from doing the things that could make our lives better.

There are right ways and wrong ways to deal with fear. Here a five mistakes people make when confronting what frightens them.

Mistake #1: Denying That the Fear Exists

You can’t confront a fear if you don’t admit that it’s there. You not only need to recognize it; you must examine it and understand it. It’s like looking at a person. The longer you look, the more you notice and the more ideas you have about what to do.

It can be helpful to keep a journal or make notes. When is it worst? What sets it off? What are the physical symptoms: tight stomach, sweaty hands, etc.? Something that’s captured in words may not seem as insurmountable.

Mistake #2: Not Taking a Break from Fear

Unless you’re in immediate danger, take a few minutes and calm down. Do some deep breathing. Take a short walk. Have a cup of tea. Taking a break will help you think more clearly.

If your face feels flushed or your heartbeat has risen, don’t worry about it. Just let if happen. This will give you practice in confronting fear. Anything you can do to feel calmer in the face of fear will make the thing that you’re anxious about less foreboding.

Mistake #3: Not Harnessing Your Imagination

Don’t let your imagination rule you. If your fear is, say, public speaking, you’re probably painting mental pictures of the worst that can happen. You see yourself visibly perspiring and losing your words while the audience stares at you sternly with arms crossed.

Instead, make your imagination work for you. Get alone and visualize success. Close your eyes and let the mental video role, from the moment you confidently take the stage until the audience erupts with applause at the end.

Mistake #4: Keeping Fear Inside

You don’t have to do this by yourself. Talking out your fears can make them smaller. If you don’t have a friend or family member you can confide in, try a clergy person or ask your doctor. An MD might recommend an expert who can help you. Depending on your specific fear, there might even be hotline help.

Mistake #5: Disrespecting Yourself for Being Afraid

Even courageous people experience fear. A person with no fear is an oddity. The truly brave people are those who work through their fears and overcome the thing that had them scared.

Sometimes fear is our friend. It warns us to avoid dangerous situations and proceed with caution. Fear can be a counselor. Listen to it when there’s true danger, and confront it when it stands between you and a goal.
