Meter

Meter is one of the first things you learn when studying how to write poetry, and for good reason. The meter you choose determines how the words make your reader feel as they move from line to line.

The iambic pentameter, for example, leads the readers through a series of five stressed/unstressed syllable pairs. This meter was popular with William Shakespeare and is exactly why ‘Sonnet 18’ is so magical.

Experiment with all the different types of meters to find the ones that sharpen the words in each line of your poem. Beyond the iambic metrical style, your options include anapest, trochee, and dactyl.

Alliteration

As you write your poem, your words naturally invoke a certain mood, helping bring even more meaning to your prose. If you want to elevate that mood even more, you need alliteration on your side. This technique centers around grouping words with similar sounds.

If you use a series of ‘d’ sounds, for example, the percussive nature of the letter darkens the mood. Dr. Suess was a master of this approach, and he used it to great effect in ‘Fox in Socks’. As he grouped up letter sounds, the poem quickly took readers on a frantic ride through his zany world.

Conceit

Metaphors are the lifeblood of poetry, so why not go even further with that approach by using conceit? Also known as an extended metaphor, conceit uses the metaphor as the central device of the poem. This is difficult to do, so use your metaphor as a guiding light as you write each line.

In ‘Because I Could Not Stop for Death,’ Emily Dickinson uses conceit to great effect by taking readers on a carriage ride journey with Death himself. The extended metaphor weaves even more meaning into every line. The prose evokes strong feelings as a result while bringing vivid imagery to life.   

Zeugma

A relic from ancient Latin and Greek poems, zeugma involves the use of one single verb to mean two different things. When done correctly, this technique shows your incredible ability to build meaning and overall mastery of the language.

Although she wrote stories, not poems, Jane Austen loved to use this technique in her writing. Most famously, perhaps, is when she wrote that “time and her aunt moved slowly,” ensuring that the words brought forth the right imagery in an instant.

Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is a fun way to add more pizzazz to your poems. This literary technique uses words that create the sound you want to describe, such as:

  • Boing
  • Growl
  • Meow
  • Boom
  • Splat
  • Pow
  • Fizz
  • Tick-tock

When you use these words effectively, your readers will hear the sound in their minds. These descriptive words make your prose more powerful while beautifully setting the mood. 5 Bone-Chilling Call of Duty Swatting Incidents

Getting into a beef with other players is often seen as just a part of playing online games like Call of Duty. But when it comes to players who take the remarks too personally or cannot lose graciously, the stakes have never been higher. That’s because there’s now always the risk of toxic behavior getting elevated to the extreme with swatting.

When that happens, police don’t hesitate to respond in full force, often with traumatic, if not deadly, results. And it’s not just a one-off thing. Here’s a look at five times Call of Duty gameplay led to bone-chilling swatting incidents.  

Andrew Finch

One of the worst Call of Duty swatting incidents happened in December 2017, and it all started with an in-game disagreement. As Shane Gaskill and Casey Viner got into it, their argument escalated to a threat of swatting.

Gaskill mocked Viner’s threats, goaded him into doing it, and then gave him a false address. Viner promptly followed through by having Tyler Barriss send Wichita Police to the home of Andrew Finch, who was completely uninvolved in the incident.

As Finch unwittingly walked out of his home, he was fatally shot by police. Barriss ended up with a 20-year sentence for his involvement, Viner got 15 months, and Gaskill received an 18-month sentence.

Brad Overbey

YouTube personalities put themselves in the public eye, so it’s no wonder they’re often the target of swatting incidents. Brad Overbey learned about the dangers firsthand while playing Call of Duty in 2019 and again in 2020.

As he streamed his games online, several people made false claims to the police and sent them racing to Overbey’s home. Armed police officers showed up both times, leaving him struggling to explain what happened without unintentionally escalating the situation.

Although things have calmed down since then, Overbey stays vigilant, always aware that it could happen again. He still streams content about shooting games to this day despite the risk.  

James Eubanks

As a nationally ranked Call of Duty player, it made sense for James Eubanks to stream his gameplay. After all, people wanted to know his secret, and they were happy to view hours of content to figure it out.

Unfortunately, all that exposure meant big problems for Eubanks, like getting swatted more than a half dozen times over the years. Each time it happened, the callers claimed he had hostages or planned to set off a bomb, resulting in a massive police response.

Even though the situation keeps happening, police are no closer to solving who has made the calls. They claim that the callers use technology to hide their identities, effectively leaving them in the dark about whom to arrest.

Max and Victoria Zeisberg

Youtubers don’t even need thousands of followers to be at risk of Call of Duty swatting. Max and Victoria Zeisberg found this out in 2014 when the SWAT team surrounded their house after a night of online gaming.

As they looked out the windows, all they saw were rifles, shotguns, and handguns pointed their way. After a fraught encounter, the police cleared them of any wrongdoing. Afterward, they shared that one of their viewers impersonated Max and told them he had killed his wife.

The assailant was never identified, even though only a few dozen people watched their stream that night. The Zeisbergs continue to stream their gameplay, although they know how the swatting incident could have gone terribly wrong all those years ago.

Rafael Castillo

Rafael Castillo was simply playing Call of Duty when police surrounded his home, intent on stopping a bloody rampage. The call they received was supposedly from Castillo, stating that he had killed his mother and planned to murder even more people. But it was all a hoax.

Instead, what really happened was that Castillo won the match, causing his opponent to impersonate him and make a horrific report to the police. A two-hour standoff ensued, involving the special operations unit for Nassau County and more than 60 officers total.

Ultimately, Castillo was cleared when officers saw that his mother was alive and okay. The assailant was never identified.

Swatting is a serious crime that can have deadly consequences. Hopefully, the police will find a way to track down the assailants, charge them appropriately, and send a strong message on how they’re not tolerating these actions anymore. In the meantime, Call of Duty players can do their part by reporting toxic behavior, refusing to engage in arguments, and keeping their info private.

Manny Pacquiao

In between all that, he still has time to help the poor and homeless live safer, more rewarding lives. Through that endeavor, he has spearheaded many beneficial community projects, including paying for the construction of over 1,000 homes to use for the homeless in the Philippines.    

Floyd Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather has built quite a reputation in the ring, earning nicknames like “The Best Ever,” or “TBE.” He’s also well-known as “Money” for his uncanny ability to bring in the big bucks whenever he lands a fight. Over the course of his career, he has earned over $1 billion, much of which has gone to many good causes.

For example, when George Floyd was killed, he reached out to his family and paid for his funeral out of pocket. He’s also paid for the funerals of Joe Frazier, Genaro Hernandez, and many others. Thankfully, many childcare providers have green flags that you should be looking out for, letting you know that they’re worthy of watching your child. Here are five signs that a provider can give you and your child everything that you need.

1. Your child feels safe around them

Probably the most important factor when it comes to determining a child’s level of comfort and security with a childcare provider, are the cues they give when they’re around that person. 

Do they seem as if they feel safe around this person? Are they acting out after contact with them? Do they show fear, or strong negative emotions when they’re initially left with that person? You know your child best and if there’s any doubt your child feels safe around a particular provider, always investigate and take action. 

2. They care about your wants and needs

One of the most important signs that your child is in good hands comes down to how the provider communicates with and listens to the wants and needs of the parents, or guardians. It shows a certain level of heartfelt concern for what’s best for the child and respecting the wishes of who is in charge of that child, even when they’re under the care of someone else.

So, naturally, some of the traits to look for in a good childcare provider are patience, kindness, and the ability to stay cool as a cucumber when things get tough. Over time, it helps to build trust between your child and their carer. 

5. They are flexible

No two children are the same, and that should be one of the biggest things that any childcare provider knows and practices each day. There are certain ways to handle each child, so a good provider has the ability to be flexible with their plans and can adapt in an instant. 

Flexibility doesn’t just mean actual care, too, but also with time. Schedules can get a bit hectic for anyone who has a child, and not every day is going to be the same. Good providers offer flexibility with their time, and those who don’t adhere to a set schedule that has to be followed will be much easier for you.
